2010 PBA Junior Olympics Recap
|
|
|
 |
Personal Best Athletics, Oklahoma Youth Track & Field Club, have strong performances and great experiences from 2010 USATF Junior Olympics National Championships:
Personal Best Athletics is coached by Eric Hudgens, from Tulsa, OK. The PBA Team is made up of student-athletes from Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Sperry, Catoosa, Cleveland, Jenks, Inola, Guthrie, Edmond, Tuttle, Lawton, Mustang, Ardmore, and Oklahoma City.
The PBA Team traveled from Oklahoma on a 30-plus-hour Charter Bus ride to California. Along the way the team visited Pepperdine University, where the team got a workout in, and Coach Robert Radnoti took time to speak with the team. Afterward we hung-out on Venice Beach, before heading to Sacramento, CA. While in Sacramento some of the team visited Sacramento State University and spoke with several college coaches throughout the week while at the meet. The Junior Olympics competition started Tuesday, July 27 and went through Sunday, August 1. On the way home the team visited UCLA in Las Angeles, CA. Coach LaMonte Vaughn was very gracious with his time is sharing the campus and the program with us. The UCLA campus, track program, and Coach Vaughn’s inspiring words made for a strong completion of a week that tested these young athletes in finding out how good they can be against the best competition in the Nation. The teams final moments in California were spent at Santa Monica Pier and on the beach, a well deserved relaxing time for this group before the 30-plus-hour ride home.
Coach Hudgens shares his thoughts on the trip, “At USATF Junior Olympic Nationals, the nations top athletes come to see who’s the best. At this level of competition where there are many that have ran faster than you, jumped higher, thrown farther, and compete against better competition than you...some of the team found themselves overwhelmed and defeated, making the experience an eye-opening awareness to learn from, they will go back to Oklahoma with a new perspective, more focus, a stronger work-ethic, and motivated to come back next year knowing what they need to prepare for. Most of the PBA team found out how good they can be when pushed to do their very best. I believe all these young athletes have greatness inside of them, and it’s been a joy in guiding them and encouraging them to let it out! Overall, the experience was amazing and better than I could have asked for. Because this group has become like a family and they have made for a supportive environment that brings the best out in each other. I’m very grateful for the experience as a coach and I hope they are grateful for the experience as an athlete and as a growing adolescent. I would like to especially thank Mr. Westcott and Mrs. Monforton for their patience, help, and support with all of these young lives! I would also like to thank Marrisa Thomas, an ORU student-athlete and PBA Alumni, for her assistance throughout the week, and for her sharing her experiences at this level with the new girls on the team.”
PBA completed the Junior Olympics Championships with 30 student-athletes finishing in the top 20; 24 student-athletes set Personal Records; 8 finished in the top 10, and 6 made All-American: The PBA 4x800m (Alex Ervin, Ashton Adams, Haley Monforton, Chloe Berlioux) made All-American finishing 4th overall, JyWayne Allen (from Southern Oklahoma Track Club) made All-American in the 400m finishing 5th overall, and Alex Ervin made All-American a second time in the 1500m finishing 7th overall.
PBA’s Performer of the Meet:
Alex Ervin (Sperry High School) had a full week of good times, literally!!! On Wednesday, July 27, Alex was lead off leg for the PBA Young Women’s 4x800m that finished 4th at 2010 USATF Junior Olympic National Championships. Top 8 finishers at the meet are considered All-American and receive medals. The next day, Thursday, July 28, Alex ran in the open 800m and finished 19th overall with a Personal Record 2:19.55. Then Friday, July 29 she ran in the 1500m pre-lims (top 12 make the finals). She ran a Personal Record of 5:00.34 to make the finals with the last spot (12th). After a day off, Alex came back to the track, focused and ready, on Sunday, August 1 to run in the 1500m finals. With the goal of running under 5min and hoping to make the top 8, Ervin ran the most amazing race with an even bigger Personal Record (4:51.31) and medaled with a 7th place finish overall making All-American for the second time. A huge congrats to a well deserving young lady!
PBA’s 2010 Summer Season Most Improved:
Marc Westcott (Town & Country School) ran 13:47 in the 3000m to qualify for USATF Junior Olympics National Championships. At the Junior Olympics Marc ran a huge Personal Record 11:55.30 (over a 2min PR).

We will travel through the night and arrive at the hotel early Tuesday, July 27.
