Personal Story of overcoming adversity, including lessons learned and character gained through the experience...
Something that has been challenging for me is my anxiety. It has always been a constant factor in school, social settings, and sports. Before a test or meets, I would always be worried I wouldn’t get a good grade or have a good swim or run. Although I have been swimming competitively for almost nine years and running for 5 years, I still have the occasional bundle of nerves and thoughts of “am I good enough”. Throughout my years on the Jenks high school swim and cross country team, I have learned that you do not need to worry and as long as you have done the work, you can do it. I no longer worry as much as I did freshman year, and going into senior year I have been able to bring my anxiety to a normal level.
Express what you hope to do with an opportunity to be a scholarship-student-athlete. What you hope to give a team and accomplish in college as we'll as what you hope to do with your education and how that big step of completing a degree will lead toward your long term goals...
I am deserving of this prestigious gift of running or swimming in college because no matter the day, good or bad, I will always give my best effort and be a teammate to my team. I have always loved the sport of running and swimming and if given the chance to participate in college, it would be an amazing and incredible opportunity. With this opportunity, I will continue to work my hardest and be the best teammate and athlete I can be. It is a privilege to get to run and if given the opportunity it will continue to be a privilege and gift.
Coach Hudgens bio and insights on Gabby Vargus...
Gabby is simply exceptional. She has the capacity for endurance like that of an Iron Man Triathlete, with elite youth level experience in swimming and running. Her greatest capacity is her enthusiasm and willingness to learn and grow. She has an intrinsic motivation for swimming, running, and other health and fitness components that makes a Real Joy to coach and positive energy for teammates that workout with her. Throughout the time I've known Gabby, I've witnessed her diligence in giving her very best for her team, I've shook my head at her sick-twisted-appreciation for swimming lap after lap after lap after lap in the pool, and I've been blessed with experiences of riding along side her in her first months of consistent cycling. She is persistent, driven, and always willing to give her Personal Best. Gabby's presence is an empowering positive vibe and I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a part of her journey.
